Town of Rutland Secures $200,000 Green Communities Grant for Heating Improvements

Green Communities Public Works Facility

January 24, 2024 - Town Administrator Austin Cyganiewicz is pleased to announce the Town of Rutland has been awarded a $200,000 grant from the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources (DOER) through the Green Communities Grant program.

"We are excited to receive this significant grant from the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources. We are proud to continue demonstrating our environmental stewardship as a Green Community, and this funding will allow us to make further vital energy improvements to our Public Works Facility, all while saving Rutland tax dollars,” said Town Administrator Cyganiewicz.

The allocated funds will be directed towards the installation of state-of-the-art air source heat pumps in the office space, providing a more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly heating solution. Additionally, infrared heaters will be installed in the garage bays, further optimizing energy consumption. The project is anticipated to save over $20,000 per year in utility costs.

“I am ecstatic that Rutland has been awarded this competitive grant from DOER. This project has been identified as a high priority by our Capital Improvement Planning Committee,” said Rutland Select Chair Leah Whiteman. “We are committed to addressing our facilities' carbon footprint and thank our state partners for their continued support.”

The Green Communities Grant program aims to support municipalities adopting clean energy solutions and reducing overall energy consumption. Rutland's successful application reflects the town's dedication to creating a greener and more resilient community. The Town has received over $600,000 in grant funding since becoming a program member.

Rutland extends its gratitude to the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources for recognizing the town's commitment to green initiatives. The successful implementation of these energy improvements will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the community for years to come.
